Schoolnet India: National Education Policy (NEP 2020)

Published on: July 16, 2024

Technology has reached new heights, making it crucial to transform our education system. This change will help achieve sustainable development and create more job opportunities for students by allowing them to learn and sharpen their skills. In this light, the Union Cabinet has given the green light to the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The NEP lays out a clear plan for achieving excellence, innovation, and quality in Indian education.

Developed with input from top stakeholders and the general public, this new policy aims to strengthen our education system, achieve a 100% literacy rate among youth and adults, and make India a global knowledge superpower. The NEP is not just a policy; it's a vision for a brighter future.

Key Components of National Education Policy

A. Universal Access

The new national education policy aims to make school education accessible to all, from preschool to secondary level, by introducing several inclusive and equitable provisions. These include:

  1. 1. Innovative Education Centers: The policy supports creating innovative education centers to provide high-quality education, especially in disadvantaged areas.
  2. 2. Good Infrastructure Support: NEP 2020 stresses the need for well-equipped classrooms and laboratories to ensure an optimal learning environment.
  3. 3. Tracking Student Progress: Policy focuses on monitoring student progress based on learning levels, ensuring every student achieves basic literacy and numeracy by grade 3.
  4. 4. Multiple Modes of Learning: National education policy 2020 promotes a flexible approach to learning, combining formal and informal education methods.
  5. 5. Experienced Faculty Members: The policy encourages hiring experienced and well-trained teachers to provide high-quality education.
  6. 6. Trained Counselors: NEP 2020 highlights the importance of trained counselors in schools to offer emotional and mental health support to students.
  7. 7. Open Learning: The policy provides open learning options for students in classes 3, 5, and 8 through State Open Schools, NIOS, and vocational courses, aiming to reintegrate nearly 2 crore out-of-school children into mainstream education.

These provisions ensure that every student has equal opportunities to access quality education, regardless of their socio-economic status or geographic location. This will not only improve learning outcomes but also contribute to the overall development of individuals and the country.

B. ‘10+2’ Pattern Substituted By ‘5+3+3+4’

The popular pattern of school education will be replaced with a unique “5+3+3+4” structure for different age groups: 3-8 years, 8-11 years, 11-14 years, and 14-18 years.

Today, children start formal education at age 3 by enrolling in play school programs. After play school, they move to kindergarten 1 and 2, followed by 12 years of secondary and higher education.

The new structure breaks this into stages: foundational (3-8 years), preparatory (8-11 years), middle (11-14 years), and secondary (14-18 years). This new approach includes the 3-6 age group in the school curriculum.

With this structure, the new educational umbrella will cover 12 years of schooling plus 3 years of pre-schooling or 'Anganwadi.'

C. Prioritizing Foundational Literacy and Numeracy

One of the key aspects of national education policy 2020 is Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN).

The NIPUN-Bharat initiative, launched in 2021, aims to ensure that all Class 3 students achieve universal literacy and numeracy by 2026-2027.

This initiative is supported by the Centrally Sponsored Scheme of Samagra Shiksha. It will be implemented through a five-tier system at the National, State, District, Block, and School levels in every State and Union Territory.

Advocates of FLN argue that these skills are essential for all further education and lifelong learning. They emphasize the importance of reading, writing, and basic math as foundational skills for students.

D. School Curricular and Pedagogy

The NEP 2020 aims to provide a holistic and flexible learning experience by reducing school curriculum content and emphasizing 21st-century skills such as analytical and critical thinking, experiential learning, and creativity.

The policy promotes choice-based flexible learning, allowing students to choose subjects that interest them. This approach helps develop well-rounded individuals with diverse skill sets.

Unlike the current system, NEP 2020 eliminates the rigid separation between fields like arts and science, curricular and extracurricular activities, and ensures that all student activities are valued.

The policy also introduces vocational education with internships starting from 6th grade. This gives students practical experience in various industries and professions, enhancing their employability and preparing them for the future workforce.

E. Teacher Training

The NEP 2020 highlights the importance of continuous professional development for teachers. It encourages the use of technology for training and mentoring, emphasizing the need for excellent teacher preparation.

To attract talented and creative individuals to the teaching profession, the policy proposes several systemic reforms.

One key reform is the establishment of the National Professional Standards for Teachers (NPST). These standards will guide all aspects of teacher career management, professional development, and pay increases.
